Memory: Sterling's secretary at Jones Beach sent me his obituary today 2/21/21. Sterling and I share a history as Marines as well as working at Jones Beach. Reading his accounts of battle in WWII I came across his reference to Takabanare Island which the Marines invaded in '45 after Okinawa has been secured. The island was then put off limits to Marines. 19 years later while stationed in Okinawa I took a small craft to Takabanare island. The natives had not seen white men since 1945 and they followed us everywhere we went. I took photos and sent them to Sterling. It was just as he remembered it. Nothing had changed in all these years.

I did not know him at all, only through his book. Felt like I knew him though. May God bless you, and may he Rest in Peace.

I so loved Sterling's great sense of humor. Along with letters, I would send cards for holidays. One day, not long after Labor Day, I received a note from him that said he had waited, and waited, and waited all day on the Labor Day holiday, but to no avail, there was no celebratory card from me.
Silly me. It didn’t occur to me that Labor Day was that kind of holiday. So I made a “Belated Labor Day Greetings” card for him, and started sending him cards for anything that even smacked of being a “Day.” And sometimes I’d send him Happy Tuesday (etc.) cards as well.
One year I sent a Halloween card that had a witch on a broom on the front and it said something about “I’ll be flying through your neighborhood Halloween night.” About a week later I received a drawing with a pair of witch's shoes and broom lying by the sea and on it he had written, “Carolyn I found these on my seawall, and remembered you said something about flying down!”
I will miss him. I was blessed to have been able to call him friend. It has been an honor and a privilege.
My condolences to his family.
I don’t know if it is proper for me, a civilian, to say this but I hope no one will not mind if I say it on this occasion.
Semper Fi, Marine.

Sterling of twinkling blue eyes, quick witted, beautiful laughter, huge heart. Sterling the hero, the author, the artist, the patriot, the friend.
My visits with him always included wonderful stories, jokes, and, of course, sitting on his deck watching for dolphins. I’ll so miss the hours on the phone that brightened my so many of my days. My grandfather always told me to leave this planet a better place than it was when you got here. He most certainly did that. I’m so sorry for your loss, Jody and Skip. The world is a sadder place with his absence. I loved him, too. Cynthia St. Clair
